Maximize Storage in Your Van: The Clever Sliding Door Storage Solution - Out There Vans, LLC

In a van build, every square inch counts. We’re always looking for clever ways to turn dead space into functional storage, and one of the most underutilized areas in any rig is the sliding door.

While the door frame is usually covered up by a flat piece of plywood or plastic, there are actually significant voids inside the metalwork that are perfect for storage. That’s where VanEssential Sliding Door Storage Panels come in. These are a new shop favorite here at Out There Vans because they turn an otherwise useless area into a highly functional gear station.

Today, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about these new panels for Sprinter, Transit, and ProMaster vans.

How Do They Work?

These sliding door storage panels are engineered to recess into the factory voids of your door.

  • Hidden Storage: Open-faced pockets offer shallow storage for small items like hats, gloves, and socks.

  • Map pockets: Additional non-stretch sleeve pockets let you stash flat items like maps and cords.

  • Low Profile: They sit flush so your door still slides perfectly.

  • Lightweight & Durable: These are built to match the aesthetic of the VanEssential rear door panels, providing a clean, cohesive look throughout your van.

  • Upper & Lower Options: Depending on your van model, you can choose between lower panels or a combination of upper and lower storage.

⚠️ The "Don't Overstuff" Rule

One very important tip we emphasize in the shop: Do not overstuff these pockets. Because your sliding door sits flush against the exterior of your van when open, any bulky items protruding from the pockets could potentially scratch your van’s paint. Stick to soft goods like clothing and flat items like maps to keep your exterior pristine.

Compatibility & Configuration

Whether you’re driving a Sprinter, Transit, or ProMaster, there is a storage solution designed specifically for your door’s layout. Because every van is different, the storage options vary by chassis:

Installation Tips from the Workshop

Installing these is a straightforward DIY project, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

Installing Lower Sliding Door Panels

The lower panels are designed to be "plug-and-play" by utilizing your van's existing factory geometry.

  • Factory Hole Alignment: The perimeter of the lower storage panels features pre-drilled holes that correspond directly with the factory holes in your door. You can typically reuse your original factory clips or use the new ones provided in the kit.

  • The Process: After removing your stock trim with a trim removal tool, simply align the new panel with the door's indentation. We recommend starting at the top center and working your way around the perimeter to ensure a secure, flush fit.

  • A Note on Build Layouts: If you have a kitchen galley or permanent cabinetry blocking part of your sliding door opening, installation may require a bit more patience. You might find yourself reaching through the door from the ground to seat the clips properly—fitment and ease of installation will vary based on how tight your interior build is!

Installing Upper Sliding Door Panels (Sprinter & ProMaster)

Unlike the lower sections, the upper storage panels for the Sprinter and ProMaster are designed to be slightly larger than the door's indentation to ensure full coverage.

  • Drilling Required: To install the upper panels, you will need to hold the panel centered over the indentation and drill a 3/32” pilot hole through the panel directly into the van’s metal door frame.

  • Securing the Panel: We recommend starting with a single screw in the top center to hold the weight, then adding screws to the lower middle and each corner. Use a drill bit with a depth stop (set at 3/8”) to ensure you don't drill too deep into the door's exterior skin.

Additional Tips:

  • Check Your Insulation: These panels can be installed with or without insulation. Most people (ourselves included) have 3M Thinsulate installed inside their van doors. This will limit the depth of the pockets slightly. If you have your door stuffed tightly with insulation, you won’t get as much storage depth into the pocket, but you’ll still have plenty of room for smaller items.
  • Obstructions: Be mindful of electric door mechanisms. On some van models, a motor module might sit inside one of the voids, which will make that specific pocket shallower than the others.
